About Travel to Dalat

Dalat is an attractive small city located in an alpine region, located just over 300 km by road to the north east of Ho Chi Minh City. Dalat is a popular short break destination for Vietnamese holiday makers, and the location of choice for many organised family and business events. Foreign visitors do come to Dalat, but in smaller numbers than to better known destinations such as Sapa or Ninh Binh.

Dalat City

Dalat is a compact city with around 400,000 permanent residents, and a city centre lake. Visitors staying in the city centre can easily walk between the city’s popular attractions. Because Dalat is located at altitude (1,500 metres above sea level) and the weather is much cooler than in low land Vietnam, walking around is a pleasant option. At night visitors often find that they need to wear a jumper or jacket.

Dalat is a city with a holiday atmosphere, and the pace of life is slow. Dalat has a small amount of nightlife, focused on a handful of bars such as the Beepub, The Frog Bar, and the 6th Floor Bar. Most restaurants and bars in Dalat are empty by 22:00 and visitors need to search around to find more lively establishments later in the evening.

City Centre Attractions

There are lots of places of interest in Dalat City which, if you choose to stay in the city centre, you visit on foot. It’s a fairly long walk, however, to see all of them in a single day:

  • Xuan Huong Lake: The 5 km wide city centre Xuan Huong Lake is a popular place to walk around and to enjoy the scenery.
  • Nha Tho Domaine de Marie: Located to the north of the lake, the Domaine de Marie is a mid 20th Century catholic church built by French colonialists. Distinctive features of the church include its pink walls and the wood used to decorate the interior.
  • Dalat Train Station: Completed in 1938, Dalat’s small attractive train station is similar in appearance to Trouville-Deauville Railway Station in Normandy. Currently, there are train services from Dalat operating on a 7 km long section of railway line running as far as Trat Mai Village.
  • Dalat Market: Located 350 metres walking distance to the north of the western edge of Xuan Huong Lake, Dalat Market is very much the focal point of the city. A wide range of products are sold in the market, the most popular of which are locally grown fruits and vegetables much of which is preserved.
  • Emperor’s Villas: The last Emperor of Vietnam built three small palaces and a summer home in various locations in Dalat City. These buildings date back to the 1920s and have been well preserved.
Other Attractions

The main attractions in Lam Dong Province, of which Dalat is the capital city, are located outside of Dalat itself. The surrounding countryside is very beautiful and visitors need to organise transport, or join a tour, to really appreciate the area. These attractions include:

  • Thien Vien Truc Lam Monastery: This hill top temple, located about 5 km south of Dalat, is accessible via cable car. Both the temple itself and the views are very good.
  • Linh Phuoc Pagoda: Accessible via local train services from Dalat, Linh Phuoc Pagoda is a colourful temple with lots of unusual architectural features, such as a 49 metres long model of a dragon made out of 12,000 glass bottles.
  • Waterfalls: There are 3 large waterfalls in Lam Dong Province, all of which are accessible by road from Dalat.
    • Prenn Falls (10 km from Dalat)

  • Valley of Love: The Valley of Love, or Thung Lung Tinh Yeu, is another small lake surrounded by gardens which is a popular beauty spot. Thung Lung Tinh Yeu is located about 6 km to the north of Dalat city centre.
