About Travel to Can Tho
Can Tho is a unique large city with over 1 million residents located in the Mekong Delta, 160 km to the south west of Ho Chi Minh City. There is no beach in Can Tho, or major historical attractions, but a city which is defined by its many waterways with a distinctive culture and way of life.
Floating Markets
The main attraction for leisure visitors to Can Tho is to see the floating markets in and around the city. Unlike the modern day floating markets in Thailand which have been created specifically to entertain tourists, the floating markets in Can Tho are a continuation of a much older tradition of transporting the produce of the fertile Mekong Delta by boat to larger towns for sale. For sure, improved road transportation is eroding the importance of river trade, but local people do still buy and sell vegetables and other agricultural products from river boats.
Four Main Floating Markets
There are four floating markets which take place daily in and around Can Tho.
The largest and most visited of the four markets is Cái Răng. Cái Răng Market takes place every day first thing in the morning on the Hau River near the centre of the city. To get a good view of the market you need to take a boat tour.
The other three daily floating markets (Phong Dien, Phung Hiep, and Tra On) are located outside the city centre and visitors need to travel by boat for an hour or more to reach them. You can reach Phung Hiep floating market by road from Can Tho but once you get there you still need to take a boat to properly experience the market.

Boat Tours
There are lots of different boat tours you take from Can Tho, lasting different time periods. and seeing different places. Increasingly boat operators are also offering tours which take visitors to see other things than simply markets, and often include visits to the homes of people living along canals and rivers to see them making things or cooking food. These types of tours are becoming popular as they focus more on local communities and less on the major tourist attractions.
The price of tours depend not only on their length, or number of passengers, but also on who you book them with. Hotels, travel agents, and others who arrange tours need to take a commission to pay for their time. Booking directly with the boat operators is a good strategy for getting the best prices. Lots of boat tour operators (often ladies) congregate at Ninh Kieu Port and this is a popular place to go to find a boat that will take you to visit the markets. For more specialist tours to lesser visited places we recommend searching on the internet to book directly with the people operating these tours.
Other Attractions in Can Tho
There are places on land in Can Tho City to visit. You aren’t going to find any major tourist attractions, but there are nonetheless some points of interest that are unique to the area and not overrun with tourists as the famous attractions in Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi or Hue.
Among the land based places we recommend that you should visit whilst in Can Tho are:

- Quang Duc Pagoda: Quang Doc Pagoda is the largest Buddhist temple in the city. It’s located on Mau Than Street. This temple gets busy with visitors in the early morning and later afternoon when the weather is cooler.
- Tham Tướng Church: Also located on Mau Than Street, Tham Tướng Church was constructed during the period when Can Tho was under French colonial rule.
