Phong Nha is located 780 km by road to the south of Sapa in Quang Binh Province, Central Vietnam. The nearest large city to Phong Nha is Dong Hoi, which is 44 km by road to the south east. Phong Nha is a popular tourist destination because of its picturesque riverside location and its proximity to the Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park.
Accommodation in Phong Nha
Phong Nha is a small village stretched out along the banks of the Son River with around 3,000 permanent residents. Despite Phong Nha’s small size it has around 90 hotels and guesthouses. Tourists tend to outnumber local people in Phong Nha making it similar in some respects to some other popular destinations in Vietnam, such as Tam Coc Village.
The cheapest places to stay in Phong Nha are hostels, such as Jungle Boss Homestay and Hahaland, where a bed for the night in a dormitory costs the equivalent of $5 USD. For more privacy in a basic private room you need to pay from $10 to $20 USD a night.
For more luxurious riverside or lakeside accommodation rooms cost $20 USD a night or more in hotels such as the Phong Nha Coco Riverside. There are no very expensive hotels or resorts in Phong Nha Village. The most costly rooms tend to be around $50 USD a night in Phong Nha – Lèn Chùa Ecostay.
Food in Phong Nha
There are plenty of places to eat in Phong Nha. Most of the hostels, guesthouses, and hotels offer food, and for very cheap local food there are food stalls which are set up at night along the main road running through the town. In addition to this there are around 30 independent restaurants and bars in the village, many focused on catering to leisure visitors.
The most popular restaurants in Phong Nha, such as Phong Nha Family Restaurant and The Rice House, serve modern versions of popular Vietnamese dishes. Other options include The Villas Restaurant, which among things serves French cuisine, and Ganesh Indian Restaurant Phong Nha, which is notable for its freshly made Indian breads.

Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park
There are activities to do in Phong Nha Village, such as Kayaking in the Son River and walks to fun local restaurants such as the Pub with Cold Beer, however, the main activities to do in the area relate to the Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park.
The Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park is a protected wilderness area covering 857.54 square kilometres. As well as being home to a wide variety of animals, birds, reptiles and insects, the park is particularly notable for being mountainous with 12 hills rising to over 1,000 metres above sea level, and for having over 300 caves.
There is no fee charged for entering the park, there are however fees and in some cases permits required to visit the better known attractions within the park. Visitors also need to organise transport. Some of the attractions can be reached by road or river boat, other places are difficult to reach, and this increases the expense. Among the most difficult places to visit in the park are the very large caves, such as Son Doong and Hang En, which are located a long walk away from the nearest road and visiting them involves joining an overnight guided expedition.
Many other attractions in the park, however, are much easier and cheaper to reach.
Phong Nha Cave
The most visited attraction in the Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park is Phong Nha Cave. The trip to Phong Nha Cave takes about 2 hours and it departs from, and returns to, a boat station in the centre of Phong Nha Village. Tour boats travel about 1.5 km into the cave where passengers then disembark to explore the inside of the cave.
Visitors don’t need to organise this tour in advance, they simply need to visit the boat station between 07:30 and 15:30 and pay the required fees in advance before starting the tour. 15:30 is the latest time boats will depart on this tour.
- Entrance Fee: 150,000 VND (per person)
- Boat Fee: 550,000 VND per boat (up to 12 people)
Because the tour boats are fairly large, many solo visitors or couples will seek out other people to share a boat tour with.
