About Travel to Da Nang

Da Nang is an increasingly popular holiday destination. Not only is it a large busy city with lots of interesting places to visit, it also has a great beach. In addition to this, Da Nang is an excellent base for visiting some of the best tourist attractions in Vietnam.

About Da Nang City

Da Nang is located in Central Vietnam, by road it’s just slightly closer to Hanoi (750 km) than it is to Ho Chi Minh City (920 km).

The city itself is large, with around 1 million living in the city centre and a total of 3 million living in the wider metropolitan area. The city centre is split into two parts by the Han River. The eastern half of the city is the area where most leisure travellers choose to stay because it’s near the beach and there are clusters of bars and restaurants catering specific to tourists. The western half of the city is where the commercial centre and also where the city’s main cultural attractions are located.

Transport Connections from Da Nang

Da Nang City has excellent transport connections. Da Nang Airport is located only 6 km by road to the west of the city’s main tourist areas. From Da Nang you can fly to other cities in Vietnam, as well as take scheduled flights to major destinations in other Asian countries such as Bangkok in Thailand.

Da Nang is also on a major stop on Vietnam’s north to south railway line. By train from Da Nang it takes from 9 to 11 to travel to Nha Trang and 17 to 21 hours to travel to Ho Chi Minh City.

Hotels in Da Nang

Da Nang receives around 15 million overnight leisure visitors a year, and has a large amount of tourist accommodation as a consequence. Around 800 hotels, guesthouses, and hostels are available to book online. A lot of the accommodation is located in the eastern half of the city, there are also places you can stay in the western half of the city close to the river and the commercial centre of the city.

Accommodation in Da Nang can be very good value for money. The majority of the holiday makers coming to Da Nang are Vietnamese and a lot of hotels are priced for local tourists, which doesn’t necessarily mean they are cheap but you do tend to get more for than money than in Hanoi or Sapa.

The cheapest places to stay are hostels such as Starfish Alley Hostel, which charges from $4 USD a night. Mid range hotels with good quality facilities close to the beach, but not right on the seafront, charge from $20 to $30 USD a night. The city’s most expensive hotel, Danang Marriott Resort & Spa, typically charges from $300 USD a night.

Beaches in Da Nang

Da Nang has several city centre beaches. The best beach by far, however, is My Khe Beach on the eastern edge of the city.

My Khe Beach is 30 km long, stretching from the Son Tra Peninsula nearly all the way south to Hoi An. The main tourist area in Da Nang is immediately to the west of the beach, starting about 5 km south from the Son Tra Peninsula, and continuing about 3 km south from there before the city starts to thin out.

The top end of My Khe Beach, which is sometimes referred to Bai Bien Beach, is the busiest area. This part of the beach has bars and restaurants directly facing onto the beach, as well as areas for swimming patrolled by life guards which are very popular. If you travel further south along the beach it becomes a lot quieter.

City Centre Tourist Attractions

There are plenty of places to explore right in the city centre, in the western part of the city. From My Khe Beach visitors may wish to take a taxi as far as the Han River ( a journey of around 2 km) partly because of the heat in Vietnam and partly because the route is not that easy for pedestrians to walk. However, once you reach the Han River then it’s easy enough to explore the main attractions in the city centre on foot.

The city’s attractions are diverse. As well as riverside attractions, markets, and some historic buildings, Da Nang has several museums and art galleries which are well worse visiting. Among the most popular of the attractions are:

Visitor Attractions near Da Nang

There are also four major visitor attractions which you can easily reach on day trips from Da Nang. These four attractions are:

  • Hoi An (30 km from Da Nang): Hoi An has a small riverside area which was an important trading port from the 16th to 19th Century. It’s often referred to Hoi An Ancient Town. Several of the streets in this area feature rows of very old and well preserved houses and temples, many of which have been opened to visitors as museums or converted into restaurants and hotels.
  • Ba Na Hills (23 km from Da Nang): Ba Na Hills is a theme park located about 1,500 metres above sea level which you can reach by cable car. There is a lot to see at Ba Na Hills, including the famous Golden Bridge and a recreation of a French village built by French colonialists in the early 20th Century as a holiday resort for Europeans wanting to escape the heat of the city.
  • Marble Mountains (11 km from Da Nang): The Marble Mountains is a collection of 5 hills covered with shrines, religious buildings, and connecting stairways and paths. It’s a major local religious centre.
  • My Son Sanctuary (45 km from Da Nang): My Son Sanctuary is a temple complex built by the people of the Cham civilisation over a long period from the 4th to 14th Century. The historical site covers 1.42 square kilometres, with the buildings grouped together in clusters which you can walk between.

Hoi An is a fairly large city with plenty of tourist accommodation where you could stay overnight, although it tends to offer less good value for money. Most visitors to Hoi An come on day trips rather than stay the night. The same tends to be true of Ba Na Hills also where the hotels and restaurants are typically much more expensive than in Da Nang.

There’s little tourist accommodation close to either My Son Sanctuary or Marble Mountains.
