About travel to Phu Quoc

Phu Quoc is the largest of Vietnam’s islands, measuring roughly 48 km by 25 km, with a surface area of over 500 square kilometres. The north and eastern parts of Phu Quoc are mountainous and heavily forested, and the southern and western parts of the island are flatter and this is where the airport and most of the tourist development is located. Phu Quoc has one large town, Duong Dong, which is home to around a third of the island’s permanent residents, of which there are an estimated 180,000. Phu Quoc has been inhabitated for at least several hundred years, and the majority of the workforce are still engaged in agriculture, fishing and some basic manufacturing prcesses, such as the production of fish sauce, for which Phu Quoc is famous.

Phu Quoc is rapidly developing into a tourist centre, and there has been major investment in tourist infrastructure projects such as the Vinpearl Land amusement complex and an 8 km long cable car service linking the south of Phu Quoc to the smaller Hon Thom island. The Vietnamese authorities have also asssited the growth of Phu Quoc’s tourist industry by offerring free 30 day on arrival visas to visitors arriving by plane. Fortunately, despite the best effort of a range of developers, the beaches and environment in general in Phu Quoc remain relatively pirstine and unpolluted and Phu Quoc is considered one the cleanest beach destinations in South East Asia. The sea around the island is clear and full of sea life. Snorkelling and scuba diving are popular activities.
