Places to Visit in Dong Hoi
Dong Hoi is a city with a long history. Archaeological finds made in the early part of the 20th Century suggesting that a human settlement has existed there for at least 5,000 years. However, in 1965 when the United States Air Force almost totally destroyed the entire city. Only two structures were left standing, and these are the city’s only historical tourist attractions:
- Tam Toa Church: Only the front of the building survived the 1965 bombing campaign, but it’s worth visiting as a reminder of what happened to the city.
- Citadel Gates: Dong Hoi’s citadel was also destroyed in 1965 except for one of the gates which has been restored.
Of more interest to most visitors are the city’s two very pleasant and uncrowded beaches (Nhat Le Beach and Bao Ninh Beach) and the riverside and canal side areas where local residents congregate in the evenings.

Hotels in Dong Hoi
Dong Hoi has over 50 hotels, ranging in price from the equivalent of around $10 USD a night to over $100 USD. Dong Hoi’s best hotels are located in the east of the city near, or overlooking, a beach or the Nhat Le River. The Meliá Vinpearl Quang Binh located on the Nhat Le River is a good option with room rates from around $50 USD.
One of the advantages of staying in the eastern part of the city centre is that you are close to the best and busiest of the city’s restaurants and bars. International cuisine is available in a number of high quality restaurants in this part of the city such as 7th Heaven Restaurant and Oregano’s Pizza.
The disadvantage of staying in the eastern part of the city, particularly on one of the beaches, is the distance from the Nam Ly Bus Station, and from Dong Hoi Railway Station (4 to 7 km by road). If you are planning to stay overnight in Dong Hoi and take a train the following day it may be more convenient to stay at one of the hotels located on the approach road to the train station. These hotels include Hung Thinh Motel and Nhà Nghỉ Lan Hương, both close to each other on Thuan Ly Street. There are also several small restaurants and cafes on Thuan Ly Street, as well as a convenience store.
