About Travel to Da Nang
Da Nang is a large modern coastal city with over 1 million permanent residents. Da Nang is not the most popular beach holiday destination in Vietnam despite having several very good beaches in the city centre, the most popular of which is the 30 km long My Khe Beach which is lined with resorts and restaurants. Da Nang is though a very good to place to base yourself in for a few days whilst exploring some of the more interesting tourists sites in Central Vietnam. For people who want to see cultural and historical attractions in Vietnam, as well as go to the beach, Da Nang is perhaps a better choice than Nha Trang.

The main attraction near Da Nang is the ancient city of Hoi An. You can stay overnight in Hoi An, but some visitors will prefer the convenience of staying in Da Nang and travelling 30 km from Da Nang to visit Hoi An. The historic part of Hoi An is a UNESCO World Heritage site on account of its long history as a trading port which goes back to 1st Century AD. Hoi An is mentioned in very old Greek writings about South East Asia. The historic old port area in Hoi An has a number of buildings which date back to a later period from 16th to 18th Centuries when Hoi An reemerged as an important trading port has a long period of decline from the 10th Century and the fall of the Cham Empire.
Other interesting places to visit close to Da Nang include the My Son Sanctuary, the Marble Mountains and Ba Na Hills:
- Located 45 km to the South east of Da Nang, the My Son Sanctuary is vast temple complex constructed over period of a 1,000 years from the 4th to the 14th Century.
- Only 11 km to the South of Da Nang, the Marble Mountains, is series of small hills with temples and shrines connected by staircases, a path, and an elevator.
- Ba Na Hills, located 23 km from Da Nang, is an increasingly popular destination, particularly so after the construction of the picture worthy Golden Bridge. Ba Na Hills was originally built as a holiday destination for French residents. The small town looks a lot like a small town in rural France and its location at 1,500 metres above sea level means that the weather is a lot cooler than it is in Da Nang. Ba Na Hills has restaurants, shops and hotels, as well as some impressive flower gardens and excellent views across the surrounding area.
