About Travel to Da Nang
Da Nang is a large coastal city located 750 km by road to the south of Hanoi and 920 km by road to the north of Ho Chi Minh City.
Tourism in Da Nang
Da Nang is Vietnam’s second most popular seaside holiday destination after Nha Trang. Da Nang is, however, a different type of holiday destination to Nha Trang. Whilst Nha Trang does have tourist attractions other than a beach, most notably Po Nagar Temple, Da Nang has a lot more in terms of history and culture to offer visitors.
My Khe Beach
Da Nang has arguably one of the best beaches in the world, which is the 30 km long My Khe Beach. My Khe Beach is located on the east side of Da Nang City stretching from the Son Tra Peninsula nearly all the way south to Hoi An.
The busiest part of My Khe Beach is located about 5 km to the south of the Son Tra Peninsula. This part of the beach is often referred to as Bai Bien Beach. There are plenty of bars and restaurants facing onto this part of My Khe Beach. Inland from Bai Bien Beach is the part of the city which is most popular with leisure visitors to the city. This area has lots of hotels, restaurants, and bars, and it’s one of the busiest places to be in Da Nang in the evening time.
Han Riverside Area
Another part of Da Nang which is popular with tourists is the riverside area in the centre of the city. Da Nang is divided into two parts by the Han River, which flows from south to north. The city centre is to the west of the Han River, and My Khe Beach is to the east.
There are four bridges over the Han River connecting the two sides of the city. The middle two bridges are large structures which are tourist attractions in their own right. The most well known of the four bridges is the 666 metre long Dragon Bridge, which has a long metal sculpture of a dragon running along the centre of the bridge in between the traffic lanes. The head of the dragon shoots out both water and flames in a 15 minute show which takes place every Saturday and Sunday at 21:00.
Da Nang City Centre
Away from the My Khe Beach area, to the east of the Han River, Da Nang has a lively commercial centre with a number of historical buildings, interesting markets, and several high quality museums. In particular we recommend visiting:
- Han Market
- Con Market
- Danang Fine Arts Museum
- Da Nang Museum
- Museum of Cham Sculpture
- Da Nang Cathedral

Hoi An Ancient Town
The most popular tourist attraction in the area isn’t in Da Nang itself, it’s Hoi An Ancient Town, which is located 30 km by road to the south of Da Nang City. The older part of Hoi An was an important port town during two periods, during the 2nd to 15th Centuries as part of the Cham Empire and then again from the 16th to 19th Centuries. The buildings in Hoi An Ancient Town date back to the second period.
Hoi An Old Town occupies a fairly small area, however, the concentration of very old buildings close together, often side by side, is unique in Vietnam and it provides a very clear picture of what urban landscapes in Vietnam looked like several hundred years ago.
Many of the old houses have opened up as museums, or used for restaurants or tourist accommodation. The small museums are interesting because they display lots of artefacts found locally, and also each explains different aspects of the history of the area, its economy, and the lives of local people. In particular we recommend visiting these three small museums:
- Quan Thang Ancient House
- Museum of Folk Culture
- Museum of Trade Ceramics
