About Travel to Vientiane

Vientiane is the capital of Laos and also its largest city with a population of around 800,000 permanent residents. There are lots of places to visit in Vientiane, although for many visitors the city is a transit point between Thailand and northern parts of Laos and increasingly between Thailand and China following the completion of the high speed train link.

Staying Overnight in Vientiane

The most popular part of the city for foreign leisure travellers is the riverside area in the centre of Vientiane on, or close to, the Quai Fa Ngum Road. There are lots of tourist hotels in this area, in addition to a wide range of restaurants and bars catering largely to tourists. There is also a popular night market in Chao Anuvong Park, which is on the south side of the Quai Fa Ngum Road, which is adjacent to a cluster of food stalls.

As well as the range of amenities available in this part of Vientiane, another advantage of staying near the Quai Fa Ngum Road is that it is close to Vientiane Central Bus Station and the major tourist attractions on the Avenue Lane Xang.

Avenue Lane Xang

The Avenue Lane Xang is a 1.2 km long three lane boulevard connecting two of Vientiane’s most famous buildings, the Presidential Palace and the Patuxai Monument. This wide city street is the focal point of the city. It bears some similarities to important roads in European capitals, despite having being constructed after Laos achieved independence from France.

We recommend that visitors to the city walk along the Avenue Lane Xang and visit Wat Si Sa Ket on the way to the Patuxai Monument. Wat Si Sa Ket is the oldest temple in the city centre having been one of the only religious buildings in Vientiane which an army from Siam didn’t destroy when they invaded in 1827.

The Patuxai Monument is a large arch similar in some respects to the Arc de Triomphe in Paris. For a small fee visitors can enter into the monument and climb seven flights of stairs to reach an outdoor area right on the top of the building. The views north and south are impressive.

Pha That Luang

Vientiane’s other major tourist attraction is Pha That Luang Temple, which is located 4.9 km by road from the Quai Fa Ngum Road. Pha That Luang is Laos’s most important religious site and the image of the building appears on everything from bank notes to the National Seal.

Pha That Luang has existed in its current form since the 1560s. The temple itself is, however, believed to be much older than that. According to local legend a stupa was built on the site during the reign of India’s first Buddhist ruler, King Ashoka, from 268 to 232 BCE. One of the reasons for the importance of the temple is the belief that King Ashoka enshrined part of the Lord Buddha’s pelvic bone inside that first stupa. The current 44 metre tall golden stupa is thought to have been built on top of a Khmer era stupa, itself built over the original two millennia old stupa.

Travel to Thailand

There are two ways to travel by low cost public transport from Vientiane to the closest city in Thailand, Nong Khai:

  • Train: By train from Khamsavath Train Station (in Vientiane) to Nong Khai. There are currently two services a day from Vientiane to Nong Khai, departing at 09:35 and 18:25. The journey is scheduled to take 30 minutes.
  • Local Bus: Local bus services to the border at the Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge depart from Vientiane Central Bus Station every 15 minutes from 05:50 to 18:00. The journey from Vientiane to the border is scheduled to take 59 minutes. Once across the bridge and into Thailand travellers then need to then find a taxi or a tuk-tuk to take them to the train station or the bus station for any onward travel connections.
