About Travel to Savannakhet
Savannakhet is Laos’s second largest city with around 120,000 inhabitants. Compared to Vientiane or Luang Prabang, there’s very little of interest for leisure travellers to see and do in Savannakhet besides enjoy the riverside views and visit historic That Ing Hang Stupa. Savannakhet is, however, an important transport hub between Laos, Thailand and Vietnam. Savannakhet also has a Thai Consulate and a steady stream of foreign visitors who come to Savannakhet to apply for a visa for Thailand.
Where to Stay in Savannakhet
There are lots of hotels in Savannakhet, and quite a high proportion of those hotels cater predominantly to Asian customers. The city has a casino which has been opened principally to cater to customers from Thailand and Vietnam where gambling is not permitted.
Savannakhet does, however, also have a number of hotels and guesthouses which cater well to visitors from countries outside the region. For a budget stay in the more lively south part of the city we recommend either the Joli Guesthouse or Leena’s Guesthouse. For more luxury try either Dao Savanh Resort & Spa or Macchiato Resort Savannakhet, which is close to the Thai Consulate.
Food in Savannakhet
Savannakhet has a fairly good range of restaurants. The city has a pizza restaurant, a Mexican restaurant, a Korean restaurant, several Vietnamese restaurants, and lots of places serving Lao or Thai style dishes.
For visitors wanting to eat European food the best (and often most expensive) option is to try one of the French restaurants in the city such as Restaurant Chez Vansom or Restaurant Café Chez Boune. Savannakhet was formerly part of France’s Indo-China Empire and the French influence on the city’s cuisine remains strong.

Applying for a Thai Visa
Savannakhet’s Thai Consulate is located in the northern part of the city. Visa applications are accepted from 08:30 to 11:00 Monday to Friday, except for public holidays. Most visa applications take 2 days to process. So that means if you submit your visa application before 11:00 on a Monday then you should receive your passport back sometime after 11:00 on the following Wednesday, so long as there are no public holidays in between.
Travel to Thailand
The crossing point to Thailand is the Second Thai–Lao Friendship Bridge, which is located about 6 km by road to the north of Savannakhet. The closest city to the other side of the bridge in Thailand is Mukdahan. From Mukdahan you can board bus services to a wide range of destinations in the North Eastern Region of Thailand, as well as to Bangkok.
It’s way too far to walk from Savannakhet to Mukdahan, and also travellers are not permitted to cross the bridge on foot. Instead, take an inexpensive bus service from Savannakhet Bus Station all the way to Mukdahan Bus Station. Services depart frequently during daylight hours and you can buy your ticket on arrival at the bus station.
