About Travel to Phong Nha
Phong Nha is a small town close to the Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park which is a more convenient and pleasant place to stay overnight than the large city of Dong Hoi, which is where the closest major railway station is located, 44 km by road from the park itself.
Accommodation in Phong Nha
Most overnight visitors to Phong Nha choose to stay either in accommodation near Phong Nha Lake or on the Son River in Phnong Nha Village. Small resorts such as Funny Monkeys Homestay and Phong Nha Lake House Resort have scenic locations and are also close to Phong Nha’s best known bars and restaurants like the Pub With Cold Beer. Visitors who only come for a day trip to the area miss out on a large part of the experience.

Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park
The Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park is large, covering an area of 857.54 square kilometres. What this park is most famous for is its 300 or so caves, which includes the largest known cave in the world, Son Doong Cave. Son Doong Cave, along with other really large caves in the park, such as Hang En Cave, are located a long distance from the road and to reach them you need to go on organised overnight expeditions which are relatively expensive compared to what you normally need to pay for accommodation, food and beer in Vietnam.
Easy to Reach Caves in Phong Nha
Much more accessible are some of the smaller caves in the Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park, particularly Paradise Cave and Phong Nha Cave. Phong Nha Cave is accessible by boat. The boat pier is in Phong Nha Town. Boats penetrate 1,500 metre into the cave and visitors can continue on foot a short way further into the cave. Paradise Cave is reputedly the longest dry cave in Asia, and visitors access the cave via a staircase and wooden walkway. To get into Paradise Cave it’s a 1.6 km walk, or ride in a golf cart, from the ticket booth so visitors need a reasonable level of fitness to enjoy Paradise Cave.
