About Travel to Vientiane

Vientiane is by far the largest city in Laos, and also the connection point for high speed rail services to Vang Vieng, Luang Prabang and onto China, as well as bus and train services south to Thailand. Vientiane is also a city with enough old buildings and other points of interest to entertain leisure visitors for 1 to 2 days.

Arrival in Vientiane

Vientiane Central Bus Station is the most convenient of the city’s three main stations because it’s right in the city centre very close to the Quai Fa Ngum Road area where most foreign visitors choose to stay overnight. The riverside Quai Fa Ngum Road, and nearby streets, has a cluster of tourist hotels, bars and restaurants, as well as a night market, and is lively in the evening time.

The walking distance from Vientiane Central Bus Station to the Quai Fa Ngum Road is around 1.5 km. If you are able to then we recommend walking because the tuk-tuk drivers operating right in the city centre are notorious for charging high fares. If you do need to take a local tuk-tuk be prepared to negotiate.
