About Travel to Halong Bay

Halong Bay is Vietnam’s best known tourist attraction. It’s a destination which most visitors to the north of Vietnam will want to visit and certain parts of the bay become very busy with tour boats at certain times of the year. The majority of the people who visit the bay come on organised tours from Hanoi, which tend to be more expensive than arranging a tour independently.

Ha Long City

Ha Long City sits at the top edge of the bay, and it’s the main access point for tours around the bay. Ha Long is a busy city with around 300,00 permanent residents and lots of Vietnamese tourists. The city, as well as the bay, is a popular holiday destination for domestic holiday makers.

Tours Around Halong Bay

There are many tour boat operators and many travel agents offering trips around Halong Bay. The price of tours varies, as does their length, and where they go. Halong Bay encompasses 1,553 square kilometres of ocean and contains 1,969 islands of varying sizes. It would take days to tour the entire area, and there are some luxurious vessels that offer overnight accommodation and spend up to 3 days at sea.

The cheaper way to see at least a good part of Ha Long is to take one of the public ferry services to Cat Ba Island. There are two public ferry services. The more expensive, and crowded, of these services depart from the Tourist Ferry Pier in Ha Long City. The cheaper and less busy service departs from Đảo Tuần Châu Pier. The only disadvantage of taking the ferry from Đảo Tuần Châu Pier is that it arrives on the other side of the island to Ca Ba Town. The more expensive service from the Tourist Ferry Pier arrives into a ferry pier in the centre of Cat Ba Town.
