About Can Tho

Can Tho, located 160 km to the south east of Ho Chi Minh City with a population of over 1.2 million people, is becoming an increasingly popular destination for tourists who come primarily to see the picturesque Cai Rang floating market. Located in the Mekong Delta, Can Tho is surrounded by farm land with rich fertile soil which yields abundant harvests of rice, fruit and vegetables which traders come to sell from boats of all shapes and sizes plying their trade on the Can Tho River.

To fully appreciate the floating markets you need to take a boat tour. There are several floating markets in the area and some interesting riverside and canals areas where people live permanently on boats. You can’t see much by walking around on the riverbank or canal side, instead you need to take to the water. A cheaper option than taking an organised tour is to rent a local boat service. A short tour with a local operator around Cai Rang Market costs around $20. For a longer tour taking in Cai Rang Market and another smaller market you can expect to pay around $40 for the whole boat for the best part of a day.
