About Travel to Hoa Binh

Hoa Binh is a mountainous province in Northern Vietnam with only one town of a significant size, also called Hoa Binh, that is home to around 40 different ethnic group. Ethnic Vietnamese people account for only a quarter of the population, and most live in Hoa Binh City. The smaller settlements in the province are inhabited by a wide range of different minority ethnic groups, each favouring different architecture and traditional costumes. The area in Hoa Binh Province which most foreign visitors head to is the Mai Chau Valley which, in addition to a main town, features over 50 small and generally picturesque villages set within a green valley backed by dramatic hills. A popular activity is to hire a motorbike to tour these villages, which welcome the income that tourists bring, as well as to visit the many caves and waterfalls in the area. A day or two in Mai Chau is the perfect antidote to the frenetic atmosphere of Hanoi.

Another popular area to visit in Hoa Binh is Thung Nai which is to the south of Hoa Binh Lake. Hoa Binh Lake was created when large parts of Thunh Nai, which means the ‘Valley of the Deer’, were flooded following the construction of dam on the Da River for purposes of generating hydro-electric power. Small islands penetrate the surface of the lake leading to comparison with the islands in the more famous Ha Long Bay. There are places to stay lakeside in Thung Nai. The higher altitude of the province allows for outdoor activities, like long walks, camping and outdoor BBQs, that would be uncomfortable at lower altitudes in Vietnam. Boat tours on the lake are very popular.
