Hill Tribes in Ha Giang
Ha Giang is one of the poorest and most sparsely populated regions of Vietnam. The reason that it is economically underdeveloped and has few inhabitants is because the area is extremely mountainous which makes travelling around it slow, large scale agriculture impossible, and modern industrial facilities difficult to construct.
The people who inhabit the area come from a diverse range of ethnic groups sometimes known as ‘hill tribes’ the most numerous of which are the Kinh peoples who, like many other people in the province, for the larger part make a meagre living from growing tea and fruit farming. Tourism brings welcome additional income to Ha Giang, although there are some concerns about children missing out on their education in favour of trying to get money from tourists. Never give money to child beggars or child souvenir sellers as this is likely to perpetuate the cycle of poverty in the region.

Ha Giang City
About 10% of the province’s population live in Ha Giang City, which is the location of the main bus station and the only part of the province with a cluster of shops, hotels, bars and restaurants.
Ha Giang Loop
There isn’t a great deal to see and do in Ha Giang City itself, but it is the starting point for the famous ‘Ha Giang loop’ which is a 2 to 3 day motorcycle ride taking in the best of the province’s scenery and cultural attractions including the Ma Pi Leng Pass, Dong Van Plateau, and Dong Van market. Before setting out on the loop be sure to apply for a permit, which costs about the equivalent of £10 USD, and make sure the brakes and other parts of your motorbike work well because the road passes through mountainous terrain.
