About Travel to Ha Giang

Ha Giang is the main city in Ha Giang Province. Ha Giang itself is fairly small, with a population of around 70,000 and not much of interest for visitors. Ha Giang is, however, the transport hub for travel around Ha Giang Province, which is one of the most remote and sparsely populated parts of Vietnam. The mountainous countryside and ethnically diverse population makes travel to Ha Giang a richly rewarding experience for those travellers adventurous enough to explore the northern most part of Vietnam.

Facilities in Ha Giang City

In relation to its size, and isolated location, Ha Giang City has a fantastic range of facilities for leisure travellers.

There are over 80 tourist hotels, hostels, and guesthouses in the city ranging in price from around $40 USD for a night in a standard room at the Four Points by Sheraton Ha Giang to only $3 USD a night for a bed in a shared dormitory at Green Hill Hostel & Tour.

Ha Giang also has around 50 restaurants and cafes, most of which are located in the centre of the city close to the Lo River. There are lots of restaurants serving classic and modern Vietnamese cuisine, along with restaurants serving Japanese, American, Korean, and particularly Italian style food.

There are also lots of places to rent motorbikes. Many hotels, hostels, and guesthouses rent out motorbikes and you are likely to be offered motorbike rental at the reception of where ever you stay in Ha Giang as soon as you check in.

Exploring Ha Giang Province

The most popular activity for visitors to Ha Giang is to travel by motorbike or car along steep and narrow mountain roads to scenic spots and villages. There lots of trips can be undertaken as day trips, returning to the relative comfort of Ha Giang City in the evening. Among the most popular places to visit in the area are:

  • Dong Van Market: This is a Sunday market where members of several different local hill tribe groups come to sell produce, and socialise. Many local people wear traditional dress during their visit to the market.
  • Dong Van Plateau: This plateau is notable for the steep-sided limestone hills rising from an otherwise flat landscape.
  • Ma Pi Leng Pass: The Ma Pi Leng pass is probably the most photographed part of the province.
  • Pho Bang Village: Pho Bang Village is an excellent example of a traditional hill tribe village.

To really see the best of what Ha Giang Province has to offer, however, takes considerable commitment as it involves a 3 to 5 day tour on a motorbike, or by off road vehicle, around what is known as the ‘Ha Giang Loop’.

Ha Giang Loop

The Ha Giang Loop is a 327 km long road route which, travelling clockwise, follows road QL4C north, before looping back to the west on road QL34. The route is commonly described as having 4 stages:

  • Hà Giang to Yên Minh (101 km)
  • Yên Minh to Đồng Văn (44 km)
  • Đồng Văn to Mèo Vạc (24 km)
  • Mèo Vạc to Ha Giang: (158 km)

Some of the road surfaces on the route are poor and this slows the rate of progress around the loop, particularly for travellers using smaller motorbikes. Completing the whole route takes 3 or 4 days because visitors tend to manage to travel on average about 10 km an hour.
