Ben Thanh Market in Ho Chi Minh City

Ben Thanh Market is a must see attraction for all visitors to Ho Chi Minh City. As well as being a significant historical building it is also a lively place to go shopping and an even better place to eat Vietnamese food. Ben Thanh Market is housed within a large Art Deco style building completed in 1912 at time when the city was under the control of the French colonial government. The market’s origins, however, go back to the 17th Century when vendors gathered in the area where the current market building was constructed.

Ben Thanh Market is now principally a tourist market. Clothes and souvenirs are the main items on sale, and the market is not particularly notable for being good value for money, although it does contain a very wide range of products which is what makes it a good place to go shopping. The greater strength of the market is as a place to eat food. The food section in the market is good value for money and much of the food is cooked in an authentic Vietnamese style. Vietnamese people come to Ben Thanh Market to eat. In the evenings after the market shuts, which is at 18:00, food stalls open up around the edge of the market which are generally very busy until about midnight with local workers coming to eat on their way home after finishing their shift.
