Phong Nha Village
Phonh Nga is a small village with around 3,000 permanent residents. Despite its growing popularity with tourists, the village is far from over developed in the same way as Vang Vieng in Laos, which like Phong Nga is another riverside destination set within a beautiful landscape.
Popular places to stay in Phong Nha Village include the riverside area in the centre of the village, and more peaceful lakeside resorts a short distance to the South East of the Village. Phong Nha has lots of restaurants, such as the popular Pub With Cold Beer, but little in the way of dediacted bars. Visitors who want to go and drink tend to do that in the restaurants.
Local activities includes kayaking on the Son River or one of the lakes, walks in the surrounding countryside, but first foremost visiting the nearby Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park.

Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park
The Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park covers an area of 857.54 square kilometres, notable for its limestone hills and over 300 caves. The world’s largest caves are located within the park. Above ground the park has forests, hills, and rivers excellent for kayaking, hiking, and mountain biking. The park also has a massive range of mammals, birds, reptiles, insects, plants and trees. Clouded leopards and the rare red-shanked douc langur live in the park but are not commonly spotted by visitors. Gibbons and tropical birds are more numerous and much easier to see.
Visiting the Caves
The larger caves within the park are located some distance from the nearest road and visiting them involves a long jungle trek and at least 1 night sleeping outside. To visit you need to join an organised tour, which will normally cost in the $600 to $800 USD range per person.
Other caves are much easier to get to. The easiest to visit is Phong Nha Cave. To get to Phong Nha Cave you need to take a wooden boat from a pier in the centre of Phong Nha. The Son River flows into Phong Nha Cave, which is partially submerged, and the boat will take you 1,500 metres into the caves where you can get out and explore the cave further. Other easily accesible caves include Paradise Cave, which is a dry cave, and Tien Son Cave. which is notable for its stalactite and stalagmites.
