About Travel to Can Tho

Can Tho is the largest city in the Mekong Delta and it’s a popular destination for both foreign and domestic tourists. The city has its own distinctive culture and atmosphere, however, the major attraction for visitors is the city’s many waterways and in particular the still active floating markets that take place daily in the area.

Accommodation in Can Tho

Can Tho has over 200 tourist hotels to choose from. The cheapest places to stay in the city are hostels, such as the Welkom Inn, where a bed in a shared dormitory costs the equivalent of $4 USD a day. At the other end of the scale hotels, such as the Sheraton Can Tho or Victoria Can Tho Resort, charge around $100 USD a night. For a good standard 3 star hotel, such as the Saigon Can Tho Hotel, expect to pay $20 to $30 USD a night.

Visiting the Floating Markets

The only way to get a good view of the floating markets in or near Can Tho is to take a boat tour. Boat tours are the main visitor activity in Can Tho and an important source of income to people in the city. So much so that when you arrive in the city it won’t take long before someone, such as a taxi driver or hotel reception, attempts to sell you a tour. The same is likely to happen again to most visitors numerous times during their stay in Can Tho.

Nonetheless, boat tours to visit the floating markets and other places on the local waterways are a pleasant and interesting experience. Visitors have a choice of a variety of different itineraries for their tour, and some tour operators are starting to expand and diversify their tours by new activities such as home visits to people leaving on the canal and river banks.

Arranging a Boat Tour

The most expensive way to arrange a boat tour is to ask a travel agent or your hotel to arrange it. A large commission will be made by the seller. A popular alternative to booking through someone else is to go to Ninh Kieu Port, where boat operators congregate, to negotiate a tour directly.

The price of the tour will depend in part on how long the tour is and where you want to go. There are 4 main floating markets in the area and some are further away than others. The largest of 4 markets is Cái Răng Market, which happens very early in the morning on the Hau River right in the centre of the city. A short 1 hour boat tour would be sufficient to see Cái Răng Market because it’s actually in the city. The other markets (Phong Dien, Phung Hiep, and Tra On) are all located outside the city and by boat it takes an hour or more to reach them.

Other Attractions in Can Tho

Can Tho’s city centre area is fairly compact and easy to tour on foot. There are not so many land based attractions to see in the city, however, from the late afternoon onward Can Tho becomes much more lively. The city has a large student population which traditionally congregates in the Xuan Khanh Student Quarter of the city centre in the early evenings. The student quarter has lots of small restaurants and a youthful atmosphere. As it gets later in the evening the riverside Hai Ba Trung Street becomes more lively with lots of people sitting outside eating and drinking at restaurants and bars.

In terms of places to visit on land in Can Tho City, the most popular are:

  • Cái Khế Market: Located on Trần Văn Khéo street, this is a large and interesting market selling a wide variety of foodstuffs grown or caught in the Melkong Delta area.
  • Tham Tướng Church: Catholic church built during the time Vietnam was under French control.
  • Quang Duc Pagoda: Can Tho’s largest Buddhist temple.
