About Ha Long City
Ha Long is a medium sized city of around 300,000 permanent residents whose principal industry is tourism. The city is divided into two halves connected by a bridge. The Western half of the city, Bai Chay, is the most popular with tourists, whilst the Eastern half, Hon Gai, is where the city’s office buildings and industrial facilities are located. Ha Long City is not a particularly popular destination in its own right for most tourists, whose only reason for coming to Ha Long City is to take a boat trip. The city is, however, fairly popular with Vietnamese and Chinese tourists partly because it is near Hanoi and has a beach, albeit not a particularly good one. The city does have hotels and some good seafood, but not many facilities specifically aimed at international visitors. Ha Long City also has a fairly interesting museum and Sun World amusement park which has two areas, one on each side of the city, connected by a cable car. Other than that there isn’t much to commend the city itself to tourists, although the large bridge connecting the two halves of the city is beautiful when lit up at night and the view of the bridge makes the waterside an enjoyable place to enjoy a drink in the evening.

There are plenty of boat trips around the bay and beyond departing from Ha Long City. The boat trips fall into two categories: the more expensive organised trips and the scheduled cheaper departures. People tend to book the more expensive organised boat tours online or in Hanoi, although local travel agents will sell them at inflated prices with some advance notice. The cheaper option, if you pay the correct price, is to take one of the scheduled boat trip from Ha Long City back to Cat Ba Island which pass through some of the most scenic area of Ha Long Bay, albeit with few stops on route and crowded ferries. There are two places where you can board these ferry services to Cat Ba Island and they are both in the Western part of the city: the Tourist Ferry Pier and Đảo Tuần Châu Pier. The most frequent ferries to Cat Ba Island depart from the Tourist Ferry Pier. The ticket price is 80,000 VND, however, most foreign tourists struggle to get the ticket vendors to sell them a ticket for that price. A more hassle free option is travel to the more distant Đảo Tuần Châu Pier where ferry tickets to Cat Ba are more reasonably priced at 50,000 VND. The disadvantage of travelling on ferries that depart from Đảo Tuần Châu Pier is that they arrive on the other side of the Cat Ba island to Cat Ba Town, whereas as the ferries from the Tourist Ferry Pier arrive at a pier right in the middle of Cat Ba Town.
