About Travel to Da Nang

With over 1 million residents living in the city centre, and around 3 million people living in the wider metropolitan area, Da Nang is by population the sixth largest city in Vietnam. It’s also by far the largest city in the central region of the country.

Tourism in Da Nang

Da Nang has become an increasingly popular holiday destination over the last decade. It’s still not as popular as Nha Trang (which is much closer to Ho Chi Minh City) but it’s catching up fast.

Like Nha Trang, Da Nang has a fantastic city centre beach. However, the city has a lot more to offer visitors than simply a beach. What Da Nang also has is a really good range of cultural and historical attractions to visit both in, and near to, the city. Da Nang’s cultural and historical attractions are just as important in terms of the city’s appeal to tourists as the beach, or the city’s extensive range of restaurants and bars.

My Khe Beach

The focal point of the Da Nang’s tourist industry is the eastern half of the city adjacent to the magnificent 30 km long My Khe Beach.

My Khe Beach runs south from the Son Tra Peninsula nearly all the way to Hoi An. The busiest part of the beach is a stretch known as Bai Bien Beach, which is about 5 km walking distance south from the northern end of the beach. This part of the beach is lined with hotels, restaurants, and bars. Inland from Bai Bien Beach is the city’s largest concentration of businesses catering to tourists. This is one of the busiest parts of the city at night and where the majority of leisure visitors to the city choose to stay.

Tourist Attractions in Da Nang City Centre

There are lots of interesting places to visit right in the centre of Da Nang City. It’s possible to reach most of these attractions on foot, although from the My Khe Beach area it makes sense to take a taxi as far as the Han River and to start walking from there.

  • Museums: Da Nang has three really good museums.
    • Da Nang Museum is a very modern facility with around 2,500 artefacts relating the history of the city and the region.
    • The Museum of Cham Sculpture holds the world’s largest collection of Cham artwork.
    • Danang Fine Arts Museum has three galleries dedicated to Vietnamese art. Some of the artwork is modern, some items are antiques.
  • Markets: Da Nang also has a range of interesting markets, none of which are as focussed on tourists as many of the other major markets in popular tourist destinations:
    • Han Market is the most centrally located and busiest indoor market in Da Nang. Food products, including dried fish and squid, are sold on the ground floor and the upper level is dedicated to clothes and souvenir type items.
    • Con Market is another indoor market. The focus of the market is food, both cooked foods and cooking ingredients to take away. The stalls are typically run by small independent operators selling mostly locally made products at value for money prices.
  • Riverside Attractions: Aside from a small number of historical buildings, such as Da Nang Cathedral, the other major tourist attractions in Da Nang City are located in the central riverside area and they include:
    • The 666 metre long Dragon Bridge is one of four bridges across the Han River, which runs through the centre of Da Nang City. What’s special about the Dragon Bridge is the steel sculpture of a dragon located in the centre of the bridge between the traffic lanes. The head of the dragon shoots out flames and jets of water in a 15 minute show every Saturday and Sunday night.
    • Very close to the Dragon Bridge is Love Lock Bridge, which is a pier rather than an actual bridge jutting out 68 metres into the river. The bridge is inspired by the Pont des Arts in Paris where couples have traditionally attached locks to the metal structure of the bridge to symbolise their relationship and hopes for its longevity. Engraved padlocks are available for purchase to attach to Da Nang’s only small version of the Pont des Arts.
Tourist Attractions near Da Nang City

As well as the places to see in Da Nang City itself, visitors can also reach a number of other major tourist attractions on day trips for the city. The four most prominent of these nearby attractions are:

  • Marble Mountains:
    • 11 km by road from Da Nang City.
    • The Marble Mountains is a collection of five hills, each believed to represent one of the five elements in ancient Chinese religious beliefs.
    • Visitors can walk around the hills visiting the various shrines and prayer halls.
  • Ba Na Hills:
    • 23 km by road from Da Nang,
    • Ba Na Hills is a French style village built in the early 20th Century as a holiday centre for French settlers. It’s located at altitude with a noticeably cooler climate than Da Nang City.
    • Activities at Ba Na Hills include walking around the town to look at the European architecture, admiring the flower and vegetable gardens which thrive in the cooler mountain climate, and walking along the Golden Bridge, which is a 150 metre long hill top observation bridge.
  • Hoi An:
    • 30 km by road from Da Nang.
    • Hoi An’s Ancient Town area features several streets with clusters of very old buildings and a port area dating back to a period from the 16th to 19th Century when the town was a prosperous commercial centre.
    • Many of the older buildings have been transformed into museums such as the Museum of Folk Culture and the Museum of Trade Ceramics which also some displays artefacts dating back to a second much earlier period, from the 2nd to 15th Century, when Hoi An was one of the most important trading ports in the Cham Empire.
  • My Son Sanctuary:
    • 45 km by road from Da Nang.
    • The My Son Sanctuary was the major temple complex of the Cham people in Southern Vietnam. The temples were constructed over a 1,000 year period from the 4th to the 14th Century.
    • Many of the buildings at the  My Son Sanctuary, are heavily dilapidated. Most visitors focus on exploring the small sections of the 1.42 square kilometres site where the best preserved buildings are located.
