Visitor Attractions in Kampot City
There are no major tourist attractions in Kampot City. Other than riverside views, and colourful markets, the main points of interest in the city centre are colonial era buildings. Kampot was under French control from 1889 to 1940 and during that time a number of European style buildings were constructed, the most impressive of which is the former Governor’s Residence.
Phnom Chhnork Temple
Phnom Chhnork Temple is one of the main tourist attractions in the area. It’s located 14 km by road to the east of Kampot City.
Phnom Chhnork Temple is a 7th Century cave temple dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva. Visitors need to descend several hundred steps to reach a brick entrance to a small cave with a shrine to Shiva. Other points of interest at this temple include ancient stone carvings.
Green Cathedral
The ‘Green Cathedral’ is the name which has been given to a kayaking route along a series of waterways in an area about 6 km to the north of Kampot City. Some of the waterways are narrow with trees growing on each side of the river creating a canopy similar to the roof joists in a medieval European cathedral.
The route starts from the Preaek Tuek Chhu River travelling eastward along a series of much narrower waterways in a 3 km loop, which ends at nearly the same spot on Preaek Tuek Chhu River as the route started. There are several places near the start of the Green Cathedral where visitors can hire kayaks. It takes most people from 1 to 2 hours to travel by kayak along the entire route.
Beaches
Kampot City is located about 6 km upstream from the sea. There are two beaches you can reach from Kampot in under an hour.
The easiest one to get to is Kep Beach. There are plenty of minivan services from Kampot all the way to Kep Beach, The journey takes 30 to 45 minutes. Kep Beach also has a popular seafood market where you can buy fresh fish and crabs and ask vendors to cook it for you.
The better, but more difficult to reach, of the two beaches is Coconut Beach. It’s located on a small island 11 km by road due south of Kampot City. There’s no public transport to Coconut Beach so visitors need to rent their own vehicle or hire a tuk-tuk for a return journey.
Pepper Farms
The product which Kampot is most famous for is pepper. Real Kampot pepper is very expensive and much of the pepper that’s on sale in Kampot City is grown elsewhere, particularly on nearby Phu Quoc island in Vietnam.
For authentic Kampot pepper the best option is to take a trip to one of the pepper farms near the city. Many offer guided tours. The pepper farm which foreign visitors most frequently visit is the foreign run La Plantation, which has the most effective marketing and to be fair has invested the most in visitor facilities. There are other farms in the area, however, which offer visitors a similar experience.
