About Ninh Binh

The main attractions in Ninh Binh Province are Tam Coc and the Trang An Grottoes. Ninh Binh City itself is not a popular tourist attraction. Tam Coc is an area with steep limestone hills rising above picturesque rice fields and a slow winding river. You can access the area on a bike or take a trip by boat. One of the main attractions in Tam Coc is Bich Dong Pagoda, located high up on one of the largest hills in the area. There are also some interesting caves in the cliffs of Tam Coc which are accessible by boat. However, more popular than the caves in Tam Coc are the caves in the nearby Trang An area which can also be reached by boat.

Ninh Binh Province also has some interesting religious buildings which are well worth visiting. Phat Diem Cathedral, completed in 1898, is one of the most interesting and impressive Christian religious buildings in South East Asia. This large cathedral has been built using traditional Vietnamese design principles and features pagoda style roofs in a marked deviation from the European architectural styles commonly associated with Christian churches. A more recent addition to the landscape of Ninh Binh Province is the Bai Dinh temple complex which features a tall ornate pagoda set within a mountainous area of enormous natural beauty. The scale of the Bai Dinh temple complex, which covers over 700 hectares, is breath taking.
